About

transgender resourcesWelcome to Transgender Resources for parents of transgender kids. I’m Kimberly and I’m the mom of a teenage trans boy, James. I only found this out last year when my beautiful baby girl came to me and told me that she felt like a boy and wasn’t a girl. There were few signs of this, most of which I attributed to being a tomboy and/or lesbian. My child also has Asperger’s Syndrome (a high functioning level of Autism) and I immediately wondered if this was a ‘special interest’ that he had latched onto.

At first I panicked. I am an accepting and inclusive person, but this threw me for a loop. It seemed the reality I had been living for the past 16 years was a lie. I was in the Twilight Zone.

I felt that I was now expected to change our past and substitute the words he/him/his for every memory I had about my child. I worried what our family and friends would think and how they would react. I wondered exactly how far my child was willing to go medically to become the boy he wanted to be. Given his Asperger’s diagnosis, I questioned if this was permanent or just a passing fad. Why would my kid want to make his life even harder than it already was?

One of my passions (obsessions?) is learning everything I can about a subject and researching it to death.  I kicked into research mode to help me cope with this new reality.  I am now much more informed and calm.

This website is the result of that research. I was all over the web trying to find transgender resources applicable to parents of transgender kids. I’d like to share what I have learned with other parents of transgender children. I hope to help parents to accept, support and encourage their children to express who they know themselves to be.
