There are numerous resources available for parents of transgender kids, both online and locally. Here are a few of my favorites:
Online parent groups for parents of trans kids (I’m a member of four on Facebook). They’re a great resource for parents to share info and support with each other
The National Center for Transgender Equality is the nation’s leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-saving change for transgender people.
GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBT acceptance. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love. They also have extensive resources.
Trans Student Educational Resources is the only national organization entirely led by trans youth. While TSER members do have specific roles, we purposely do not have an executive director or management to make sure all levels of the organization have a voice and operate collectively.
The Transgender Project is an online collection of profiles designed to record, share and celebrate the personal stories of transgender women and men from across Canada; stories of struggle, of courage and of triumph. Those individuals who chose to be involved with the project reflect the broad diversity that exists within the trans community itself. Though they vary in age, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds, each one has fought to cast off the gender assigned to them at birth and embrace their true selves.
Gender Creative Kids offers resources for gender creative kids and their families, schools and communities in Canada
PFLAG Canada is a national charitable organization, founded by parents who wished to help themselves and their family members understand and accept their non-heterosexual children.
PFLAG Our 400+ chapter network provides confidential peer support, education and advocacy in communities in nearly all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Gender Spectrum – Every family is unique, with different family dynamics, as well as cultural, social, and religious influences. Learn more about how these influences can affect the children in your life.
My Kid is Gay – is a first-of-its-kind digital presence, inclusive of videos, advice, and resources, dedicated exclusively toward helping parents understand their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual children. My Kid Is Gay sources voices from across the world to help answer the many questions that parents (and family members, and even teachers!) have about the LGBTQIA young people in their life, including advice from parents, youth, and experts on a variety of topics related to sexuality and gender identity.
There are also many books available that discuss the various issues of being a transgender parent.
